The Humberside Police department – which handles policing for East Riding of Yorkshire, Kingston upon Hull, and North and Northeast Lincolnshire – is encouraging residents to report others for not observing the “social distancing” regulations that have been enacted in response to the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.

They have created a portal on their website which allows anyone to submit details of those who have been observed not practicing social distancing.

The UK has advised that people should not congregate in groups of more than two, and that they should only leave their homes for essential purposes. The police are now authorized to disperse any gatherings as a preventive measure.

The Humberside Police have said that the portal was created because of the high number of calls they were receiving in which people wanted to report social distancing violations.

However, they did make it clear that “reports will be assessed based on the information provided and we would ask people to please consider the circumstance before making their report,” according to an article published at ITV News.

“We will not be able to deploy officers to every single report of social gatherings that contradict the Government’s advice and dependent on the information within the report will determine our response,” said Chris Philpott of the Humberside Police.

Police departments across the UK have been making use of their newly-granted powers to crack down on social distancing offenders. Two days ago, the Derbyshire Police posted drone footage of people who were violating the government’s measure to social media.
