Two New Calls Under the Union Training and Innovation Program | Grants101

The Government of Canada has launched two new calls for proposals under its Union Training and Innovation Program, which aims to ensure that apprentices in the skilled trades can complete their training and find work.

The first stream, Investments in Training Equipment, will help unions improve the quality of training through investments in equipment and materials. Organizations managing training funds for Red Seal trades workers are also eligible to apply. The maximum amount of funding per project is $10 million (50% of project costs, or 30% if applicants face certain challenges).

The second stream, Innovation in Apprenticeship, will support innovation and partnerships to address challenges faced by apprentices. Unions, nonprofits, for-profits, Indigenous organizations, educational organizations, municipalities, and provincial and territorial governments are eligible to apply. The maximum amount of funding per project is $10 million (90% of project costs).

The program also aims to help to reduce barriers to participation and success among underrepresented groups in the trades, such as women, newcomers, persons with disabilities, and visible minorities including Black Canadians.

Both streams will remain open for applications until August 28. Funding decisions are expected to be made in November.

“Skilled tradespeople are a key component of Canada’s workforce. Their work is critical to several essential sectors during the pandemic, and they will continue to support the Canadian economy as it moves towards economic recovery,” said Employment, Workforce Development and Disability Inclusion Minister Carla Qualtrough. “This investment will help Canadians get the training they need to start exciting and well-paying careers in the trades.”

Organizations in Quebec are not eligible to apply — they should refer to this other joint federal-provincial program.
