Understanding the Model of Human Behaviour
There are four basic styles known as temperaments, and they
blend together to make up your unique personality style. There are four
parts to the circle. I will describe the first two parts, outgoing and reserved,
followed by the other two parts, task and people style personalities, to show
you how and why you do the things you do. The following information
relates to how quickly people move, act, think, and speak their behaviours,
how they relate, and the intensity of how they express their emotions.
Outgoing
Outgoing active people are very fast paced; they move quickly. They are
optimistic and very energetic. These types of personalities are always on
the go, and they tend to express their emotions very intensely. Outgoing
people are comfortable with things moving very quickly as their world
naturally moves at a fast pace.
You will find that when outgoing people are in a room, the energy levels
soar, and their presence can be felt as they are very dynamic individuals.
You can often associate them with being the life and soul of the party,
people who get things going, who build momentum.
Outgoing active people like to be involved in groups and socials events.
They like to be seen and see others. They are very positive and tend to
look on the bright side of life. For them the cup is half full rather than
half empty. They have an enthusiasm in their voice when they speak, and
this permeates throughout their life in the many activities that they like
to take on.
Reserved
The reserved type personality moves at a slower pace than that of outgoing
people. They’re more deliberate in their thoughts, words, and actions. They
usually don’t express their emotions intensely unless pushed. They’re more
comfortable when they’re given time to adjust or to think before they act.
This speaks to their natural cautious nature. You may hear them say things
like ‘Let me think about that’ or ‘Are you sure about that?’ or ‘Can you give
me a moment to just deliberate on this?’
Reserved people tend to identify more concerns and are likely to express
reluctantly. This is generally because they have a strong value for comfort
and to explore the ramifications of their decisions. Reserved people have
a wonderful ability to discern and distinguish the deeper issues at hand
between events that occur; they are able to see below surface level.
Reserved people are critical thinkers, in the way a mechanic would lift the
bonnet to of a car to diagnose and assimilate what may be wrong. This
behaviour is systematic and methodical.
You can think of the outgoing- and reserved-type styles as having internal
motors which drive the speed in which they like to move through life. If you
imagine that the motor moves much faster for the outgoing active people,
it tends to move at a reduced speed for the reserved type personalities.
I must emphasise here that there is no right or wrong, neither good nor bad
personalities; there are only differences. And it is the difference that matters
and would serve well to be honoured, remembering that each personality
style has its own set of strengths and weaknesses and none is without.
