Vidyut Mohan’s Prize Winning Innovation Against Delhi’s Air Pollution

Delhi is among the world’s most polluted cities and is the world’s most polluted capital. With passing time the Air Quality Index (AQI) in India’s capital city keeps on deteriorating. One of the foremost reasons for rising air pollution is stubble burning. While many steps have been taken by authorities to tackle the problem, there seems to be no end to the toxic air of the city. However, 30-year-old Vidyut Mohan’s prize-winning innovation is being considered as a potential solution to Delhi’s air pollution.

The invention is a small-scale, tractor mountable tool that is efficient in converting tons of agricultural waste into renewable fuel and fertilizers. The developed apparatus can transform rice straws and coconut shells into an energy source. The equipment works on the principle of a coffee roaster.

Waste roasted by the machine in controlled temperatures can generate fuel, fertilizers and other goods for agricultural use. The machine is now being tested at various sites but it was initially piloted in Uttarakhand. The creation is efficient in reducing up to 98 percent of carbon footprint.

The 30-year-old Delhi-based mechanical engineer is also the founder of Takachar, whose invention won the Earthshot Prize. India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Vidyut with regards to the technology invented and a potential partnership with the government.

Vidyut said;

It was such an honor meeting the Prime Minister, who was very curious about my winning agricultural waste recycling project and had some very encouraging words about scaling this up to help farmers all over India.

Something has to be done as soon as possible since Delhi’s air quality has dropped to the ‘severe’ category this month. With the help of Mohan’s innovation, the government is anticipating resolving the city’s air pollution problem effectively.

The technology can definitely turn into the sailing seed for the future. If the machine can potentially transform agricultural waste into energy and other useful materials, the world’s agricultural waste issue could be solved easily.
