Weinberg Commons receives Innovation Award from Corporation for Supportive Housing
The Jewish Federation announced that its Weinberg Commons community was recently recognized as an innovator in the supportive housing field by the Corporation for Supportive Housing (CSH) for its unique approach that balances the competing demands of independence and community belonging, integrated project settings, and scale for development. Thank you to Stephen L. Schoch, AIA, LEED AP, managing principal of Kitchen & Associates, for the nomination. Schoch was one of Federation’s partners in this project and nominated the Weinberg Commons for this national award knowing the significant impact it has already made in our community in just a short amount of time.
The Weinberg Commons was developed by the Jewish Federation of Southern New Jersey and Pennrose Properties to provide quality, affordable housing for older adults (55+) and adults with special needs. This 160-unit community features two residential buildings with 80 one-and two-bedroom apartment homes each, as well as eight quad-style, congregate cottage units for adults with special needs that offer a total of 16 apartments.
Cottage communities for individuals with special needs are often freestanding developments. At the Weinberg Commons, a new unit typology was created as a hybrid of the traditional group home and the supported apartment models, combining four independent one-bedroom apartments with extra shared living space for programming. This unique housing model offers its residents both privacy and a strong sense of community, making the Weinberg Commons a true innovator in the field of supportive housing.
“We are so appreciative of this award for the Weinberg Commons,” said Jewish Federation CEO Jennifer Dubrow Weiss. “Working with Steve and Kitchen & Associates was a true pleasure, and our vision and dream became a reality with their fabulous design and implementation. Affordable supportive housing is so very much needed in New Jersey, and we are blessed to have had this opportunity.”
This is the second award that the Weinberg Commons has won. In 2020, the Weinberg Commons received the 2020 Supportive Housing Project of the Year Award from The Supportive Housing Association of NJ (SHA).
