World IP Day 2024: A Day to Recognize, Celebrate, and Promote Creativity and Innovation By SBE Council at 26 April, 2024, 10:08 am ….and to Reaffirm America’s Commitment to Strengthening and Upholding IP Rights and Protections FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Washington, D.C. – Today is World Intellectual Property (IP) Day, a day to celebrate the creative spirit and innovation that drive progress and economic growth. It is a day to create awareness about the importance of IP rights and protections and why they must be safeguarded. Small Business & Entrepreneurship Council (SBE Council) president & CEO Karen Kerrigan issued the following statement about the importance of World IP Day, along with the need for the U.S. to lead on protecting and strengthening IP rights at home and across the globe: “SBE Council is proud to join our allies in recognizing, valuing and celebrating innovation. We recognize the vast economic contributions that are generated via innovation across 127 industries, dominated by small businesses, that depend on IP protections for their creative works – patents, trademarks and copyrights – and the need to uphold these rights and protections. Small businesses and startups drive innovation across industries, and strong IP protections enable the vibrancy and investment that keep our economy competitive, inclusive, and strong.” “The U.S. IP system supports strong economic growth, accounting for $7.8 trillion in GDP. That represents 41% of total GDP and more than 47 million jobs. America’s innovative ecosystem has provided a model for many nations to replicate, or hope to create, and traditionally our leaders have emphasized the need for IP rights and protections as a foundation for encouraging innovation, investment and entrepreneurship. Our policies must continue to emphasize those IP rights and protections and that begins at home by supporting the laws and frameworks that have led to America’s vibrant innovative and entrepreneurial culture. When IP rights and protections are undermined, opportunity, creativity, and economic growth are damaged. Today is a day for President Biden and Congress to pledge to uphold opportunity and progress through IP. We ask that they share this message across the globe to enable greater opportunity and to enhance lives everywhere.” CONTACT: Karen Kerrigan, [email protected] SBE Council is a nonpartisan advocacy, research and education organization dedicated to protecting small business and promoting entrepreneurship.
