SOME 2,000 orthopaedic surgeons from across the globe will be participating in the upcoming 52nd ‘Annual Scientific Meeting’ (ASM) organised by the Malaysian Orthopedic Association (MOA) in Penang.

The MOA ASM 2023 will take place at the Setia SPICE Convention Centre from June 15 to June 17.

In conjunction with the programme, the MOA will be organising the ‘Live to Move 2023’, a fundraising cycling event prior to the gathering which is on June 14.

The 50km fundraising cycling event (around the island) will begin at Setia SPICE Convention Centre.

MOA president Prof Dr Tunku Kamarul Zaman Tunku Zainol Abidin said, the association is hoping to raise over RM20,000.

“Currently, a total of 20 doctors have registered for the ‘Live to Move 2023’ programme.

“Although the event is organised for the people in the association (orthopaedic surgeons fraternity), the public is also welcome to join the cycling event,” Tunku Kamarul told Buletin Mutiara after attending a press conference to announce the MOA ASM 2023 and the fundraising event at Komtar today.

State Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Yeoh Soon Hin said the meeting would act as a testament to Penang’s reputation as a leading destination for medical conferences and events.

“In the next decade, the number of Penangites aged over 60 will nearly double and this will put pressure on healthcare services and increase demand for aged care in our state.

“I want to promote healthy ageing for the elderly and work towards an inclusive and caring society by adopting an active ageing policy for Penang.

“The state government is not just aiming to support the lives of the elderly, but is also investing in the future of the society as a whole,” Yeoh said.

Yeoh also congratulated MOA for supporting the Arthritis Foundation Malaysia (AFM) through the ‘Live to Move’ initiative.

“The AFM plays a vital role in championing the welfare of arthritis patients by providing essential information, resources, and access to optimal care, and promoting advancements in scientific research.

“Their efforts in raising awareness and supporting those affected by arthritic and rheumatic disorders are commendable.

“Remarkably, the MOA has chosen to organise ‘Live to Move’ in support of the AFM, and I hope that more organisations will follow suit,” he said.

Meanwhile, Penang Convention and Exhibition Bureau (PCEB) chief executive officer Ashwin Gunasekeran said the MOA ASM 2023 plays a pivotal role in advancing healthcare knowledge and fostering innovation.

“They provide a platform for experts to exchange ideas, present groundbreaking research, and discuss the latest developments in medical practices.

“Penang has been making concerted efforts to escalate the business events industry within the state, especially the medical field.

“To date, the medical conferences have yielded close to RM 285 million with a total of 40,653 delegates,” he added.
